Pursuing Musical Excellence

Hi my name is John Michael Thomas and I am the Youth director of the Eastern Youth Chorale.The reason for this website is to reach our market that uses the internet to do thier daily transactions, helping us to achieve a larger audience.To be a member of our group you don't have to stress yourself about an embarrasing audition but simply just have to sing a scale in C major! Even if you dont make it, thats's ok because we believe that auditions make one very self conscious and nervous and the audition is sometimes not the best of your ability! So we allow you to sit among us and try! So if your interisted to try, we say come on down!

Big Things Happening in the East!!!

On the third Thursday of August 2005 a small group of about 12 members gathered at the Santa Rosa R.C Church Arima for the first practice of the Eastern Youth Chorale. It was established that there would be weekly practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays. However soon there were more frequent practices as the group started rehearsing for their first Christmas concert which took place at the St Jude’s’ Anglican Church Arima on the 2nd and 4th of December 2005. The group really gave a good account of themselves displaying a fairly high standard.

Not too long after this they started to prepare feverishly for the Trinidad & Tobago Bi –Annual Music Festival. Again, hard work and dedication were evidenced by their outstanding performances with Krystal Borris gaining first place in the Steel Pan solo category, the choir reaching finals in the Religious Contemporary Choirs category and winning first place in Mixed Voice Choirs; the Ladies Vocal Trio attained third place and the Mixed Voice Quartet acquired third place.

With added confidence, the choir which has grown to 40 members strong successfully produced a grand production of “Musicale 1” under the distinguished patronage of newly inducted His Worship the Mayor Adrian Cabralis and the Arima Borough Council in celebration of the Borough’s 119th anniversary and EYC’s first Anniversary. “Musicale 1”  took place on the 25th and 26th August at the Kabsco cinema at 8:15 pm on both nights, featuring excerpts form Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera” and Walt Disney’s “Aladdin”.

The concert done with full costume and choreography featured Joanne Pyle, acclaimed as the most celebrated mezzo soprano soloist in the Caribbean region; Germaine Wilson, best performer of the Trinidad & Tobago Bi Annual Music Festival; Dawn and Danielle Williams, two prominent members of the Writers’ Block and soloists with the Marionettes Chorale; Music Festival winner Sonnelle Gonzales, and A moment of Silence, a well known rock group of Diego Martin. Musical accompanists include Sheldon Moralis and Helene St Bernard on the Keyboards and the Kesica Brewster String Ensemble. EYC soloists who played the parts of Christine were; Jessie Rahaman on the 25th and Krystal Borris on the 26th, the phantom was played by Aaron Mark Allayne on the 25th Marvin Smith on the 26th August.

The concert began at 8:15 pm and featured an art gallery during the show’s intermission in the Kabsco’s lobby area. The Gala Opening night’s programme included a presentation of the “People of Arima Award” for “Woman of the Year” (sponsored by the Chorale) awarded to none other than Easlyn Lezama for her continuous hard work and dedication in building the community of Arima for the past 40 years.

The Eastern Youth Chorale is a movement of young people pursuing musical Excellence:

By being in an environment, which fosters an Appreciation for the Creative & Performing  Arts;

By Accepting instruction;

Through well orchestrated and intense musical/vocal training which helps to promote the practices of discipline.

The main objective of this movement is to enable youth to realize their full musical potential, which indeed is an integral part of their holistic development; thereby establishing a solid foundation for professional performers. This in turn will impact aesthetically on the community thus awakening their sensitivity to the arts, allowing them to earn their due respect and to assume their rightful position in our nation.
